The street was initially named Pecan Street and is lined with structures dating back from the 1800’s. These structures currently house numerous bars, pubs and entertainment venues.

In addition to musical venues, the street is home to a multitude of diverse restaurants and eateries. From gourmet, top of the line restaurants to Tex-Mex and Cajun diners, there is something to suite every taste imaginable on this magical street.

It is not just country and western music that one would hear along this street. The strip is alive with music of all types including; jazz, blues, rock, hip-hop, beat, progressive, metal and even punk.

It is not uncommon to see the odd celebrity roaming through this popular area of the city. Big name celebrities, politicians, university students and cowboys blend together to form a unique mixture of tastes and culture.

Music and fantastic food are not the only venues you can find on this unique stretch of roadway. Hair salons, tattoo parlors, art galleries and eclectic shops are also thrown into the mix. There really is something for everyone on this 7 block stretch of roadway in central Austin.

Certain events, such as Mardi Gras, The Republic of Texas Bikers Rally, Pecan Street Festival and Sixth's Street infamous Halloween celebration all make for great times with great people. Be sure to check out the annual Austin Fine Arts Festival which showcases over 200 of the nation’s top visual artists. Eeyore's 41st Annual Birthday Party is another event which should not be missed. Originally a hippie love-in festival, the event has evolved to include family members of all ages. Experience games, entertainment and even face painting.

Austin’s Sixth Street can be credited with giving Austin the well deserved label of the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Some well known entertainment venues along the strip include; The Austin Music Hall, Emo’s Austin, Friends and Top of the Ritz.
